What is Samba?
The rhythm of Samba came into being in Brazil, early in the 20th century, the product of several influences. Brazilians heard the military bands of the Portuguese colonizers, and loved the stirring sounds of the percussion. At the same time, the African influence was always deep in the Brazilian heart. Putting African rhythms on those big, resonant drums created an inspiring new beat – and since Brazilians must move and groove, the dance was soon born.
Samba Olywa teaches and performs Brazilian-style street samba, a living tradition, beloved of Carnaval-goers today.
